When to Replace vs. Repair Your AC

You're staring at a $1,200 repair quote on a 9-year-old AC. The tech is hinting at replacement. The internet is contradictory. Here's the honest framework we use with our own customers.

The "5,000 Rule"

Multiply your AC's age by the repair cost. If the result is over $5,000 โ€” replace.

  • 5-year-old unit, $800 repair โ†’ $4,000 โ†’ repair
  • 9-year-old unit, $1,200 repair โ†’ $10,800 โ†’ replace
  • 12-year-old unit, $400 repair โ†’ $4,800 โ†’ marginal, lean repair

This isn't perfect, but it's a fast gut-check.

The "50% Rule"

If your repair quote is 50% or more of a new system's cost โ€” replace.

  • $8,000 to replace, $3,500 repair โ†’ replace
  • $8,000 to replace, $1,500 repair โ†’ repair (usually)

5 Other Factors That Matter

1. How old is the system?

Florida AC lifespan: 10โ€“15 years average. After year 10, repair quotes get evaluated more critically.

2. What's the SEER rating?

If your current system is SEER 10 or lower, a new SEER 16 system cuts operating costs 30%+. On a $200/mo summer bill, that's $60/mo = $720/year. Pays back in 4โ€“6 years.

3. Does it use R-22 refrigerant?

R-22 ("Freon") was banned in 2020. If you have a leak in an R-22 system, refills now run $150+ per pound. A 3-ton system needs 9โ€“12 pounds. Don't sink money into R-22 systems โ€” replace.

4. How often has it failed recently?

Three or more service calls in 24 months = the system is on its last legs. Each fix is a band-aid on the next failure.

5. Are you planning to stay 5+ years?

New AC adds resale value, but the real payback is operational cost savings. If you'll be in the home 5+ more years, replacement usually wins. Selling next year? Just repair.

Decision Matrix

SituationDecision
5-year-old, capacitor failed ($200)Repair, no question
8-year-old, blower motor failed ($600)Repair
11-year-old, refrigerant leak in coil ($1,200)Lean replace (R-22 makes it worse)
13-year-old, compressor failed ($2,800)Replace, no question
15-year-old, anything over $500Replace

How We Handle This With Our Customers

We give you BOTH numbers honestly. Here's what a repair costs, and here's what a new system costs โ€” including monthly payment options if you finance. We don't push either. You make the call.

If we're suggesting replacement, we'll show you:

  • Year-by-year repair cost projection if you keep the old system
  • Operating cost savings on a new SEER 16+ system
  • Available rebates and tax credits
  • Financing options if cash flow is a concern
